Gregory Crewdson: Cathedral of the Pines

 

Cathedral of the Pines is the latest body of work by American fine art photographer Gregory Crewdson.  His photographs are both dramatic and cinematic. While his images often capture what appear as disturbing or surreal real-life events, they are in fact carefully staged and lit using motion picture film equipment and techniques.

This series, mark a time of transition for Crewdson, including the end of his marriage and a retreat from New York to a remote home and studio in western Massachusetts―a period of time during which Crewdson chose to remain socially withdrawn, instead committing to daily, long-distance, open-water swims and cross-country skiing on wooded paths. Cathedral of the Pines is named after one of these trails.

"Although it might be hard to tell, this picture was made under crazy winter conditions. It was below zero that day, and the wind was brutal. The house we were shooting in was really a summer lake cabin, and didn't have central heat. We had space heaters going in the room around the subject to keep her warm, but basically it was freezing in there. You can see on the windows further from camera, we left the ice on the inside of the glass. Neal from our art department had to keep scraping the ice off the other two so we could see through. The camera was positioned outside, and the battery kept freezing. Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen – Byker

Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen is a Finnish photographer who has worked in Britain since the 1960s. From 1969, Konttinen lived in Byker, a working class community in the east side of Newcastle upon Tyne. For over seven years, Konttinen photographed the residents of this area of terraced houses until her own house was demolished.

Cindy Sherman – Untitled Film Still

Cindy Sherman is an American photographer and film director, best known for her conceptual portraits.

Sherman’s “Untitled Film Stills” (1977-80) is a series of 69 black and white photographs of the artist herself enacting various generic female film characters from 1950s, and 60s Hollywood, film nior and European art-house films. Her aim is not to recreate the scenes but to re-examine women’s stereotypical roles in history and contemporary society.

Sandy Skoglund

Sandy Skoglund is an American photographer and installation artist. She creates surrealist images by building elaborate sets, furnishing them with carefully selected colored furniture and other objects, a process of which takes her months to complete. Finally, she photographs the set, complete with actors. The works are characterized by an overwhelming amount of one object and either bright, contrasting colors or a monochromatic color scheme.

William Eggleston

William Eggleston is an American photographer and one of the most influential photographers of the latter half of the 20th century,  widely credited with pioneering fine art color photography in his iconic depictions of the American South. Eggleston’s initial style was influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Walker Evans.

Monette & Mady” by Swedish photographer Maja Daniels is a photo series about the Parisian identical twin sisters. They have lived their entire lives side by side. The two sisiters are not only dress identically,  have acted, modeled and performed together for most of their lives.
